Why visitors love Essaouira
Essaouira sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. It is known for its walled medina, a working fishing port with blue boats, wide beaches and the wind that gives the city its nickname. It feels lived-in and easygoing, which is why many visitors come for a few days and stay longer.
Historically the city was known as Mogador, a name that survives in local businesses, in the island offshore and in our own name.
The medina, the ramparts and the port
The medina
Essaouira’s walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow lanes, workshops, cafés and small squares that are easy to explore on foot.
Ramparts and skalas
The fortified sea walls and cannon platforms, known as skalas, give views over the ocean and the old town’s rooftops.
The fishing port
Blue wooden boats, nets and seabirds make the port one of the city’s most recognizable scenes, especially in the morning.
Wind, waves and open land
The steady Atlantic breeze is a big part of Essaouira’s character. It shapes the beaches, keeps the air fresh and draws people to kitesurfing and surfing (both coming soon to Mogador.City). Along the coast and inland, sandy tracks and dunes are the setting for quad biking and horse riding, which you can request today.
